Bite My Review

Dark Light
A Little Bit of ‘Love’

I watch a bunch of game and technology related webcasts every week online or on my Tivo.  Stuff like Tekzilla, Totally Rad Show, Co-Op, and Cranky Geeks are all worth a look. Well, on a recent episode of Co-Op, they showed this great looking indie game under development called “Love“. It definitely looks unique and is not your normal game.  Described as a “ First person not so massively multi player online procedural adventure game“,  the screenshots don’t do it justice compared to the game-play video that they showed on Co-Op.

What’s incredible is that the entire thing has been built from the ground up by a single guy over in Sweden, Eskil Steenberg.  Digging through his site I came across a recent blog post called “I am adding and subtracting” where he talks to a bunch of questions he’s received about getting started in game development. It goes into some pretty hard core programming talk, but overall it’s a good read for anyone looking to get into game development and Love looks like it will be a game worth checking out.

He ends with a some final thoughts I really think hit the nail on the head…

Thinking you can become a great game developer because you like games, is like thinking you are qualified to be an astronaut just because you like to travel. Astronauts spend 99% on the ground training and doing science, and if you don’t have a passion for that you just wont make it. The 1% in space is really just the icing. If you don’t love that act of developing games, it simply wont work. I don’t advocate you trying to find the easiest way to make a game, because there is none, I instead think you should love the challenge of the hard parts of game development. Love the journey not the goal. Programming is a lot easier to love then you may think.
